I talk to new clients every week who have never hired a professional cleaning service before. The most common feeling is a mix of excitement and uncertainty, and sometimes a little anxiety about having strangers in their home. Both reactions make complete sense, and I want to address them directly.
Knowing what to expect on your first professional cleaning visit eliminates most of that uncertainty before the team even arrives. This post walks through exactly what happens during a Carmaci visit, from the moment we arrive to the moment we leave, so you can feel completely comfortable from the start. For tips on what to do before we get there, see our guide on how to prepare your home before the cleaners arrive.
What the Team Brings: You Don't Need to Supply Anything
One of the most common questions I get from first-time clients is whether they need to buy or prepare any products. The answer is no, the team brings everything.
Carmaci supplies all cleaning equipment and products for every visit: color-coded microfiber cloths (a different color for each area to prevent cross-contamination between the kitchen, bathroom, and general surfaces), a HEPA-filter vacuum, mops, and EPA-approved cleaning products appropriate for each surface type.
You don't need to purchase anything, set anything out, or prepare any product. The freedom from thinking about supplies is one of the things clients most frequently mention after their first visit, it turns out that "not having to stock cleaning products" is something people genuinely appreciate once they experience it.
If you have a specific preference, a non-toxic or hypoallergenic product for allergy or sensitivity reasons, for example, communicate that when you schedule. The team can accommodate product preferences with advance notice.
The First Visit: Step by Step
Here's what actually happens during a Carmaci visit from arrival to departure:
Arrival and walkthrough (5-10 minutes): The team arrives at the scheduled time. If you're home, the team lead will do a brief walkthrough of the property with you, identifying your priorities, any areas you'd like us to avoid, items you don't want moved, and any special instructions for specific rooms or surfaces. This 5-minute conversation sets the tone for the entire visit and ensures we clean the home the way you actually want it cleaned, not just the way we assume you want it.
The cleaning (1-4 hours depending on size): The team works systematically through the home, room by room. The first visit typically takes longer than recurring visits for the same home because the team is starting without a prior clean as a baseline and is learning the layout and the specific details of your property. On recurring visits, the time generally comes down as the team becomes familiar with the home.
During the cleaning: You can stay home or leave, both are completely normal. Many clients prefer to leave and return to a clean home. Others prefer to be present. There's no right answer. If you stay, the team works around you without interruption.
At the end: The team reviews the work before leaving. If you're home, a final walkthrough is available so you can confirm everything meets your expectations. Any issue is addressed on the spot rather than requiring a separate visit.
What Gets Cleaned on the First Visit
A standard Carmaci professional house cleaning, whether it's the first visit or a recurring one, covers the following:
Kitchen: Countertops, sink, exterior of appliances (refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher), stovetop surface, exterior of cabinets, and floor.
Bathrooms: Toilet (inside and out), sink, mirror, shower and tub, floor.
Bedrooms and living areas: Dusting of all accessible surfaces, vacuuming carpets or cleaning hard floors, ceiling fans, and windowsills.
Common areas: Hallways, stairs, and all high-traffic floor areas.
What is not included in a standard clean, but available on request, includes the interior of appliances (oven, refrigerator), inside cabinets, exterior windows, and walls. For full coverage of those areas, our deep cleaning service is the right option. Ask about it when you schedule if you want comprehensive coverage on the first visit.
What the Team Will Not Move or Touch
Clarity on this matters, so here it is plainly:
Personal valuables: Jewelry, cash, documents, and medication are not moved. The team cleans around these items, not through them.
Papers and work documents: Any papers or files on a desk or table are cleaned around, never reorganized or moved to another surface.
Fragile items: If a fragile item needs to be moved to clean properly, the team communicates before doing so. Nothing fragile is moved without a heads-up.
Children's belongings: Toys in piles or play areas are cleaned around. If you want toys put away or organized, indicate that during the initial walkthrough.
Anything you mark as "do not touch": The walkthrough at the start of the visit is the right moment to communicate these preferences. Everything the team does is within the instructions you provide.
The walkthrough before the clean begins is not a formality, it's the mechanism that makes the visit deliver what you actually want. First-time clients who do a thorough walkthrough are consistently more satisfied than those who skip it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the first house cleaning take?
The first professional cleaning visit always takes longer than subsequent visits for the same home. The team is starting without a previous clean as a baseline, which means more accumulated buildup to address in every room. They're also learning the layout, the materials in each space, the specific areas that need more attention, and the particular details of your home that don't exist in any other property.
For a one to two bedroom home with one bathroom, the first visit typically takes one and a half to two and a half hours. A three bedroom home with two bathrooms usually runs two and a half to four hours. Larger homes, or homes that haven't been professionally cleaned in a significant amount of time, may take longer.
When you schedule with Carmaci, we provide a time estimate based on the size of your home and the information you share about its current condition. We do not charge by the hour, which matters because it removes any incentive to work slowly. The goal is to do the job correctly within a reasonable timeframe, not to run the clock.
After the first visit, recurring cleans of the same home are consistently faster. The team maintains from a clean baseline rather than starting from scratch each time, and they're already familiar with the property. Many clients in Reading, Wilmington, North Reading, Lynnfield, and Woburn find that recurring visits settle into a reliable rhythm that fits their schedule naturally.
Will the cleaning team move furniture?
Heavy furniture, large sofas, wardrobes, beds, and dressers, is not routinely moved during a standard cleaning visit. The team cleans around and under furniture to the full extent it's accessible without moving large pieces. Moving heavy furniture without being asked creates risk of floor damage, wall damage, and injury, so the team doesn't do it as a default.
Lighter items, chairs, ottomans, small benches, step stools, may be moved to clean the floor underneath and then returned to their original position. The team always puts everything back exactly where they found it. Nothing is relocated to a different position from where it started.
If you want specific pieces of furniture moved for a more thorough floor clean underneath, say, you know there's a significant amount of buildup under the couch and you'd like it addressed, mention it during the initial walkthrough before cleaning starts. The team will accommodate what's practical given the weight, the room layout, and the flooring material.
For very thorough cleaning underneath and behind large furniture, a deep cleaning visit is the more appropriate scope. If that's what you're looking for, let us know when you call to schedule, we'll set up the right service for what you actually need.
What if I'm not satisfied with something after the cleaning?
If you find something that wasn't cleaned to your satisfaction after the team has left, contact us directly, not the cleaning team. Carmaci has a straightforward approach: if an area wasn't cleaned according to what was agreed, we return to address it at no additional charge within a reasonable timeframe. No runaround.
The most effective way to make sure you're fully satisfied is to do a walkthrough of the home while the team is still present at the end of the visit. Any area that doesn't meet your expectations can be corrected on the spot rather than requiring a separate return visit. This is why the final walkthrough matters, it closes the loop before anyone leaves.
